Specters of Communism – Panel „Die Paradise Papers – In der Schattenwelt globaler Geldströme“

On the occasion of the centenary of the October Revolution in Russia and nearly one hundred years after Kurt Eisner declared Bavaria a Free State and a socialist republic at the Mathäser-Bräu in Munich, Haus der Kunst will convene Specters of Communism: A Festival on the Revolutionary Century. This festival will trace the multifaceted, partly contrary and partly astonishingly parallel manifestations of global communism.
Conceived as a sequence of live events, the festival will bring together participants from across the fields of art, philosophy, political theory, theatre, performance, art history, film studies, and music in order to unfold the historical legacies of communism as a major feature of 20th and 21st century artistic, intellectual and political thought.
The New Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective was formed in 1992 and is regarded as one of the most dynamic practices working both internationally and within the Indian cultural context. Its members – Monica Narula, Jeebesh Bagchi and Shuddhabrata Sengupta – conceptualize their work in the realm of the history of ideas, mythological traditions, political philosophy, speculative enquiry, and narratives that are sensed from their immediate surroundings as in “acoustics of the present”. The word “raqs” in the group’s name has two meanings: in Persian, Arabic, and Urdu, raqs refers to a whirling state of meditation; it is also an acronym for “rarely asked questions”. While the collective’s practice previously focused on documentary filmmaking, they soon began to migrate toward a range of entwined roles as artists, curators, educators, writer-editors, and theatre directors. In 2000, Raqs Media Collective cofounded the pioneering Sarai program at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in Delhi and the Sarai Reader series.
Lantian Xie is an artist from Dubai who makes images, objects, stories, and situations. Xie holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is editor-at-large at Dubai-based publishing practice THE STATE.
Xie’s previous exhibitions include the National Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates curated by Hammad Nasar at the 57th Venice Biennale, 11th Shanghai Biennale curated by Raqs Media Collective, and the 3rd Kochi-Muziris Biennale curated by Sudarshan Shetty.
Meena Kandasamy has actively sought to combine her love for the written word with the struggle for social justice through poetry, translation, fiction and prose for the last fifteen years. Her debut collection of poems, Touch was themed around violence and untouchability, and her second, Ms Militancy, was an explosive, feminist retelling/reclaiming of Tamil and Hindu myths. Her critically acclaimed first (anti)novel, The Gypsy Goddess, smudged the line between powerful fiction and fearsome critique in narrating the 1968 massacre of forty-four landless untouchable men, women and children striking for higher wages in the village of Kilvenmani in Tamil Nadu. Published this year, her second novel, When I Hit You: Or, The Portrait of the Writer As A Young Wife, drew upon her own experience within an abusive marriage, to lift the veil on the silence that surrounds domestic violence and marital rape in modern India. She lives in London.
