For the latest edition of our Instagram Live Talk series, director Mateo Kries welcomed Aric Chen, design critic, curator, writer and newly appointed General and Artistic Director of Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. They discussed contemporary design from a global perspective, comparing the design landscapes in Asia, Europe, or Latin America, addressing global design challenges such as sustainability, diversity, and technological shifts.
Still based in Shanghai, Aric Chen is one of the most prolific minds in contemporary design and has previously been the creative director of Beijing Design Week, Lead Curator for Design and Architecture at M+ museum in Hong Kong, Director of the Curatorial Lab at Tongji University and the Curatorial Director of Design Miami/. Recent projects have included “X is Not a Small Country: Unravelling the Post-Global Era” at maat Lisbon (open since May 5) and “State of Extremes” (2019–20) at the Design Museum Holon in Israel.
