„Im Denken der Kaqchikel“, so der Künstler Edgar Calel, „gibt es fast nichts, was man allein tut. Alle Dinge, die wir tun, werden kollektiv getan, und diese Kollektivität dient als Grundlage für die Entdeckung: Was ist deine Funktion? Was ist deine Rolle in der Gesellschaft?“
Im Jahr 2023 wurde die Tate zum Hüter – nicht zum Eigentümer – von Calels Werk The Echo of an Ancient Form of Knowledge. Die Vereinbarung basiert auf dem Denken und den Bräuchen der Maya und erkennt an, dass Calels Kunstwerk mehr als nur eine physische Form ist und eine Hommage an die lokalen indigenen Gemeinschaften in Guatemala darstellt.
In diesem Kurzfilm besuchen wir Calel und seine Familie in ihrer Heimatstadt San Juan Comalapa und beobachten das gemeinschaftliche Kunstschaffen in Aktion.
“In Indigenous Kaqchikel thought,” says artist Edgar Calel, „there is almost nothing that is done alone. All the things we do are done collectively and that collectivity is what serves as the basis for discovering: what is your function? What is your role within society?”
In 2023, Tate became custodians – not owners – of Calel’s work The Echo of an Ancient Form of Knowledge. Based on Mayan thinking and custom, the agreement recognises that Calel’s artwork is more than just a physical form and pays homage to the local Indigenous communities within Guatemala.
In this short film, we visit Calel and his family in their home town of San Juan Comalapa, and watch communal art-making in action.
