The tapestry „The Siege of Jerusalem“, Technical approach: production and conservation
Generally speaking, tapestries are well known to art historians. However, the technical aspects of their production are often much less well understood. Yet understanding the technical aspects of tapestry production is an essential element in understanding these monumental objects and their importance in the 15th and 16th centuries.
This technical knowledge is also essential for understanding tapestry conservation issues.
During this lecture, the tapestry „The Siege of Jerusalem“ (Tournai, c. 1470, 279 x 565 cm) is used as an example to illustrate the production methods and conservation techniques used at De Wit Royal Manufacturers to ensure its long-term preservation.
