The questions about the unspoken rules of the social order, which Želimir Žilnik deals with in his works, are as important as ever. The participants of the „Wer darf Widerspruch?“ lab under the direction of Nina Kusturica explore the mechanisms of power and powerlessness and their influence on our understanding of the world.
In their „My View“ tour the group is approaching the exhibition „Želimir Žilnik. Shadow Citizens“ in an artistic way while asking: Who is allowed to do what? What is our stand towards the content of Zilnik’s works and in what form? Where do we find ourselves in it, where do we add something?
Between performative moments, they tell their own stories and reflect on different realities.
My View – is a series of tours in which experts, amateurs, and interesting people are invited to present their personal view of the exhibition.
Kunsthalle Wien`s exhibition „Shadow Citizens“ offers an insight into the radical film praxis and extensive œuvre of filmmaker Želimir Žilnik (b. 1942, lives and works in Novi Sad, Serbia) within an exhibition context.
From his beginnings in the lively amateur film scene of Yugoslavia in the 1960s, Žilnik has gone on to make more than fifty films, including a number of feature films and TV productions, often in the genre of docudrama. He received international recognition early on, winning the Golden Bear for the Best Film at the 1969 Berlin International Film Festival for Early Works.
